Financial Aid

The purpose of a financial aid program is to provide financial assistance to parents and their children who without such help would not have the opportunity to attend the school and benefit from an independent school education.  Also, our financial aid program seeks to enrich our school community by increasing the socio-economic diversity of Rivendell Preschool.  In addition, it is part of our mission to retain kindergarten students and if family finances are preventing enrollment, aid is offered.

We recognize that parents are responsible for the cost of their child’s education and are expected to contribute according to their means, taking into account total income, assets, number of dependents and other appropriate information.  Awards are based on demonstrated need and financial aid is offered only after determining that the resources of the family are insufficient to meet the student’s total educational expenses.

Financial aid is not available to students enrolled in Classroom One (Two’s Class).

Rivendell Preschool is a member of the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS), which is a division of the Educational Testing Service.  SSS reviews income, assets and debts of parents and recommends a portion of the family’s discretionary income to be used for educational expenses.  SSS does not supply funding for financial aid; that is up to each school.  Independent schools throughout New York and the United States are members of SSS. Parents who are applying to more than one school may request that multiple reports be sent.

October – December 2023

Go to https://www.solutionsbysss.com. You will be taken through the steps to create an account, if this is your first time applying for financial aid, or asked to login to your existing account if you have applied before. Make sure that you are applying for the 2024 – 2025 school year. Rivendell School’s SSS I.D. Number is 2386.

When you indicate where you want your reports to be sent, we strongly suggest that you request a family copy of the report. It is the parents’ responsibility to be sure that their financial information is correctly entered. If you have questions about any of the entries on the report, the Help Line at School and Student Services (800-344-8328) is very supportive.

  • Advise Rivendell Preschool’s School Administrator that you have submitted your Application for Financial Aid online. You may print a paper copy and bring it to the preschool office if you wish.
  • Deadline: December 15th for returning students
  • Deadline: January 15th for new students

The money for the financial aid program comes from special events organized by the Parents Association, direct contributions to the school, and the school’s annual budget.

Financial aid decisions are made by the Financial Aid Committee which consists of the executive director, the controller, the admissions coordinator, and representatives of the Board of Trustees.

The confidentiality of parents is protected at all times.

Families must reapply each year they are requesting assistance.  Families who receive financial aid from the beginning of their child’s enrollment in Rivendell Preschool are likely to continue receiving it as long as their need remains and the resources are available to help them.

We make every attempt to inform parents of their financial aid status when we send contracts for the coming year.  However, awards are contingent upon information in your previous year’s tax return which is due on April 15.  If the tax return or any other additional financial information received after the aid award is made affects the need of the family, the financial aid award may be altered or withdrawn.
